Thank you for your website. My uncle, SSgt Harry F. Sherman, is buried at Margraten and I have visited the site three times. My late mother and grandmother were in contact with the family who adopted his grave, the Steins of Wijnensrade, and with a family with whom they stayed during their 1962 pilgrimage to Holland, the Deckers of Margarten. Members of the Steins family even visited with us in Massachusetts and a bond was formed that bridged decades. If people only knew the dedication these adoptive families have to their charges it would leave them in awe. The Steins made family outings by bicycle, some 25 miles, twice each year to place flowers on Harry´s grave on the date of his death and on his birthday. By the time I knew them, three generations were involved with the little children bicycling along. Their efforts brought my grandmother a great deal of comfort and I am grateful.

My Grandfather Raymond Williams from Oklahoma is buried in Margraten. My family traveled to the cemetary for memorial day 2008. We were overwhelmed by the dedication and kindness of the wonderful people who look after the gravesites the fallen heros who rest so far from home. If you have a family member buried at Margraten, you can rest easy that they are not forgotten or alone. Margraten must be one of the most special places on earth. Thank you to all who adopt and look after the gravesites. Also thanks to the staff of the cemetary. You are all very special. Sincerely Tim Greenwood Martijn

I just wanted to say thank you to all who care for these fallen men and preserve & share their stories, and to those families of the fallen who remember their loved one and also keep his memory alive. It is important that we never forget, not just the war that was eventually won with huge cost to both sides, but the lives lost, ended too soon, that never were. I am a US Air Force peacetime vet, the son of a US Navy Chief Petty Officer retired (WWII, Korea, Vietnam wars), and I was always aware of the great sacrifice men made in war. Since I started working with a WWII veterans group here in the United States, I have come to appreciate even more the large hole left in all societies by the premature departure of the men that lost their lives in all wars. It is immeasureable...what might have been, could have been, should have been. Thank you, adopters and caretakers, for caring and remembering. Their spirits are alive as long as our memories of them are within us. Teach the children, tell the stories to anyone that will listen. Thank you so much!
