This Memorial Day, as part of my annual tribute to our uniformed men and women, I looked for more information on Margraten and came accross this sight. My father's brother, Richard Stuart Fleming, is buried there. He died on Friday the 13th of April 1945. He was a tank platoon commander who was asked to lead a dismounted reconnaisance to determine the locations of enemy positions accross the Elbe river. He was machine gunned along with two others (one of whom survived).
He had already earned the Bronze Star, but in this action earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart posthumously. I have various write ups and letters from back then and I reread them each memorial day. May we never forget any of the heroes there at Margraten. Our thanks goes out to the Dutch families who continue to volunteer to tend the graves and place flowers to honor our fallen. God bless you all. Patsy Jones

I am the neice of PFC, U.S. Army Walter Kessler, from Henry County, Ohio. He was with the 406th Infantry Regiment, 102nd Infantry Division and was KIA on April 10, 1945. His ID #35337441, and is buried at Plot I Row 16 Grave 2, in Margratten Memorial Cemetery. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, and was 20 years old. He was the eldest son from a family of 8 living children. He was raised and worked on the farm as all 8 children did.
He had never married and left no offspring. Supposedly he and another Walter Kessler were both killed at the same site. There heads were blown off their bodies, and only ID laying in area of body parts were dog tags. My grandparents decided not to bring him home for burial, as the army could not positively say body parts were his. I would like to know if anyone is putting memorial flowers on his grave, and if they might contact me so I can thank them. My Uncle Walter was one of four sons, and he and Uncle Howard both served in WWII, and my Uncle George was in Korean war. While they were at war, their youngest brother and his 4 sisters worked my grandfathers farm. I was born in 1939, and remember seeing him in his uniform the last time he was at home. He was a handsome young man, courageous and proud to be able to serve his country. I have a copy of a photo of him in his uniform. Only brother of Uncle Walter's still living is my Uncle George, who served in Korean War and he is in his mid 80's. M.Roberts

Frank J. Corl was my Uncle who I never was able meet, as he was killed before my birth. My mother always talked lovingly about her only brother. He graduated from Larchwood High School 1942 and then went to Minnesota Bible College to become a minister. In February 1943 he left school to join the Army. He trained at Camp Roberts in CA and then he served 10 months in the Aleutian Islands. He volunteered for duty as a paratrooper, and trained at Ft. Benning GA and was sent overseas on January 29 1945, with the 9th Army, 17th Airborne Div. He landed behind German lines on March 24, 1945. He was killed in action and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
